LinkedIn and its role on the journey to a tc

Can you get a vacation scheme or even a training contract without a LinkedIn profile? Yes. Do you need one? No.

Most firms want applicants to apply via their website, using a bespoke application form or via cover letter and CV.

However, LinkedIn is useful for three key reasons:

  1. Having a LinkedIn profile can help graduate recruiters and people you meet at an open day/insight event/law fair remember who you are - If you had a really good conversation with a law firm representative you met at an event, it can help them remember who you are so when you’re later applying to their firm for a vacation scheme or training contract, they are more likely to offer some advice or look out for your application.

  2. You can follow law firms - so when it comes to writing applications, you can look out for recent posts a law firm’s account has published which detail any awards, deals or partner moves. Getting this information intelligently into an application shows you’ve researched the firm and can ensure your application is tailored and firm-specific.

  3. It can connect you to resources and people - on LinkedIn you’ll find information about other resources you can use for your training contract/vacation scheme applications as well as help you find mentors, law application groups and events.
